Izzy
Breed: Labrador Retriever/Rottweiler Mix
Gender: Female
Izzy was rescued by an investigator from a life on a heavy chain with only an airline crate as protection from the elements. The photo below is of where she used to live. If you look closely you can see her hiding in the back of the crate. She is very happy to be away from that life and isn't looking back. Izzy loves people and thoroughly adores getting lots of attention and pets (something she had been deprived of for a long time). She can't wait until she finds a family to call her own.

Janie
Breed: Chihuahua
Gender: Female
Janie is a purebred chihuahua who was found as a stray in the area. Her owners never claimed her. She was found during a bad thunderstorm. She weighs around eight pounds. She is shy but once she knows you she is very sweet. She loves playing with toys. She is not great with other dogs right now but with time and work we think she'll get better. UPDATE 10-19-09 Janie moved to a new foster home where she can get more one-on-one attention. Now that she has settled in after being so traumatized after coming in as a stray she is loving to play with toys and excited to see new people. She is bossy with new dogs but with an easy going dog who lets her be boss she's fine and even initiates play. UPDATE 11-12-09 We took Janie to the vet to get spayed and her shots and the poor baby tested positive for Heartworm. So Janie is going to stay with her veterinarian so he can work on socializing her and getting her more comfortable before she undergoes treatment. Janie is a young dog so we are confident she will survive the treatment. But please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. The heartworm treatment is expensive so if you would like to help Janie by donating towards her treatment you can make a donation on our web site at www.aear.org or send a check to AEAR P.O. Box 7343 Libertyville, IL. 60048. Please make sure to mention the donation is for Janie and we'll have her send you a thank you note! UPDATE 12-08-09 Janie had heartworm treatment and is recovering very well, She is ready to find that home she will spend the rest of her life. UPDATE 1/20/10 Foster mom says Janie is getting along nicely with her other doggy siblings. She initially barks when she is left alone, but then quiets down within a few minutes. She is fully recovered from her heartworm and ready to find her forever home!

Farley
Breed: Beagle
Gender: Male
Farley is an adorable beagle. He was found as a stray by a young couple. They couldn't find the owner and decided to keep him. But they ended up moving and couldn't take him with them. Farley came to us extremely overweight. He is on a diet and exercise program now. He also has a very bad ear infection which we are treating. Farley is good with dogs, cats and kids. He has such a sweet little personality. His tail wags when he sees people. Farley is very laid back and would love a retired/older or laid back human family. "No young hyper, energetic dogs for me please," he says! Please go to our web site at www.aear.org to fill out an application or for more information. UPDATE: 11/15/09 Farley has lost four pounds and his ear infections is completely cleared up, yeah!! He is happy, healthy and ready to find his forever home! UPDATE 12-08-09 Well, Farley is still waiting for that family that doesn't mind that he is an older, laid back gentleman. Farley worries that because of his age no one will want him. His foster mom assures him a kind hearted person will come along who sees the beauty is a senior like him. UPDATE 1-4-2010 Yesterday Farley went to a grade school to meet 80 fourth grade kids. He was so excited he wagged his tail non stop! He stole the show for sure. He is such a good boy.

Gus
Breed: Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd Dog
Gender: Male
Gus was found completely emaciated. He weighs about 45 pounds now, but once he gets up to his ideal weight he will probably be more like 70-75 pounds. He is a big handsome boy who is as sweet and gentle as they come. He is good with other dogs and loves people of all ages. Despite whatever happened to him in the past, Gus won't let that get him down. He always looks at the glass as half full and likes to make people smile... and with his big brown eyes and happy tail, he succeeds every time! UPDATE: 10/4/2009 Gus' foster mom reports that he is a fabulous dog. He is great with dogs and cats and is a real charmer with people and kids. His tail is always wagging. Gus loves stuffed toys... especially when playing low-key games of tug-o-war. He will also carry his "stuffy" around in his mouth just for the fun of it. UPDATE: 12-22-09 This was written by Gus's foster dad Bill: Gus's weight now averages around 70 pounds. He continues to improve and gets stronger with each passing day as he enjoys his walks and play time with his foster family. Toss one of his toys and he will faithfully fetch and retrieve it for you. Reach for a leash and he's at your side ready to go. Go out to the car and you will find him patiently waiting to go with you for a ride. The pet store is a favorite destination, but he is content to wait in the car while you shop. A laid back gentleman who is comfortable and friendly towards all he meets and always seems relaxed regardless of the situation. Gus may be more comfortable as an only pet, but a love connection is always possible. He interacts, plays and has had no issues with his foster family's dog, a larger Amstaff/Mastif mix. Definitely a great companion dog who will appreciate all the time and attention you have to spare. Although it can take up to a year to recover from the mental and physical effects of emaciation, full recovery with no adverse effects is the norm. Don't let Gus's condition or age concern you, he got a lot of life left to live and even more to give.

Pixie
Breed: Domestic short hair
Gender: Female
Pixie was saved by our investigators from living on the property of a hoarder where 20 cats lived in poor health on the property. Because of her poor care Pixie is the size of an eight week old kitten. The vet said likely her growth was stunted. She is being treated for an upper respritory infection and needs to gain weight. She is either blind or has very little sight in one eye. She is very sweet and deserves a loving home. UPDATE 12-08-09 Pixie has grown but is still a small kitty. She is very shy but with a gentle and loving owner she will come around. Pixie is still living at the animal hospital and really needs one-on-one care. Maybe you'll consider fostering Pixie to give her the socialization she needs so she can find a forever home?

Sophie
Breed: Labrador Retriever Mix
Gender: Female
Sophie is a one-year- old mix breed dog. As a puppy Sophie spent three months tied up outside 24 hours a day without even shelter. The owners rarely fed her or gave her water so kind neighbors would give Sophie food and water. After a terrible thunderstorm where Sophie was curled up against the house, rain pelting down on her shivering in fear and cold, the neighbors had enough and called our investigators. The owners were issued a Notice of Violation and told what they needed to do to correct the situation. Our investigators checked back on two other occasions and nothing had changed. The police got involved and thanks to the team effort of our investigators and the police Sophie was taken to safety. Sophie stayed a month at Lake County Animal Control pending a court hearing where the owners were being charged with neglect. Sophie was not doing well there and so we convinced the owners to surrender Sophie. In exchange charges were dropped. We thought it was in her best interest to be placed in a foster home and begin her healing process. Sophie is shy with new people but once she knows you she is very, very sweet and loyal. She is crate trained and knows sit and stay and come. She would be best in a home with older kids or no kids due to her size (60 pounds) and she could knock a smaller child over. Sophie also needs to be an only dog. She likes her humans all to herself!

Willow
Breed: Domestic Short Hair Black and White
Gender: Female
Willow is a beautiful cat who warms up after some time to adjust. Like all cats, she is an expert at finding the most comfortable places and adores her flannel pillow case cushion. Unfortunately, Willow tested positive for FIV. Please read up on FIV to find out more about it. Willow would be best as an only cat and to a quieter family. UPDATE 10-20-09 Willow moved to a new foster home a couple of weeks ago and she has now ventured out of her "room" and was even spotted licking one of the other cats. She just needs patience and letting her adjust on her own time schedule. UPDATE 12-08-09 Well, it looks like Willow is going to be uprooted again. Her foster family can no longer keep her and she needs a place to go asap. PLEASE consider a special kitty that you can really say, "I saved a cats life and gave her a new one."

Echo
Breed: Border Collie Mix
Gender: Male
Echo is a border collie mix. He is ten years old. Echo has a very, very sad tale to tell. Echo was raised at Iams food testing lab where he lived for 8 1/2 years. If you do an internet search you will find out disturbing information about the Iams testing lab. When Echo was 8 1/2 they closed the facility and over 300 dogs and cats needed somewhere to go. One of the workers had taken a liking to Echo and decided to list him on Craig's List. For those of you that don't know Craig's List is an internet based classifieds site where dogs, cats and other animals are often given away for free. This is a horrible thing to do because in most cases if an animal is given away for free the person taking the animal is not screened to make sure they would be good owners for that animal. Also, when you give an animal away for free they have no value and thus often have a hard journey ahead of them. In Echo's case a young woman saw the ad for Echo and went and picked him up having no idea what the damage could be to a dog that lived in a testing facility their whole life. She quickly learned that he was terrified of the outside world, was emotionally distant and acted more like a cat than a dog. She was in over her head. She kept Echo for seven months. She got a new job and was moving and also going to Grad school. She called us asking us to take the dog. "She just wouldn't have time for him. It would be too hard on him, especially with everything he needs." So we agreed. Echo acts much like Liberty did, our resident Puppy Mill breeder dog. he is emotionally distant, appears confused by life and so desperately wants to not cause any trouble. He is very obedient, does what he is told and let's us pet him and talk to him. But he acts like a person who had been in a war or been part of a disaster. Echo needs a kind and patient family who will lavish him with love, teach him how to enjoy the outside, work on housebreaking, give him lots of yummy treats and a warm and cozy bed at night. The last owner said that Echo loved human beds and will warm up quickly to someone who would allow them in their bed. She also said that Echo will go potty on pee-pee pads. He is still so terrified of the outside world he won't go potty outside. According to his previous owner she has never heard him bark. Echo is ever so gentle and would probably do quite well with another dog in the house to teach him the ropes of being a dog. He is fine with cats and kids too. Echo has a ton of potential. Are you the one to give him the wonderful life he deserves?

Kimmie
Breed: DSH-Tabby/Calico Mix
Gender: Female
Kimmie, a sweet and friendly two-year-old kitty was rescued as a pregnant stray. She tested positive for FIV, the disease equivalent to human HIV. Now, that doesn't mean she's contagious to humans or dogs, just cats by bodily fluids. Kimmie can live a long and healthy life as long as she gets good food and regular standard medical care. Kimmie's kittens tested negative for FIV (we sighed with relief) and after eight weeks of excellent care by Kimmie, they were adopted to new families. But nobody adopted poor Kimmie. We won't give up on Kimmie just because she has FIV. She is so very sweet and deserves a happy life. She is used to dogs and kids so really any family without another cat would be great...as long as she was loved and well cared for. Update: 4/12/09 Here's what what Kimmie's foster mom has to say: She's been a little angel, and she is very playful. She loves to chase things and does some of the most wonderful somersaults while she plays. She is a bit shy when someone new comes over but warms up quickly. UPDATE 6-10-09 Kimmie still waits for a family to call her own. She is so friendly and playful. Won't you consider this adorable kitty? UPDATE 10-20-09 Kimmie moved to a new foster home where she is getting settled. She prefers to stay in one room but when people come in the room she is very affectionate.

Binky
Breed: Chihuahua
Gender: Female
Binky is an adorable 8-10 pound 1 year old chihuahua. She is good with dogs, cats and kids once she gets to know them. She is very loving with her caretakers. Binky has a medical condition where she leaks urine. It would take a special family willing to keep her in diapers and/or get medical care for her condition. Our organization has already paid hundreds of dollars in testing to see what is wrong with her and so far we have not found an answer. We cannot justify spending any more money at this point. 5/21/09 UPDATE: Binky has these adorable pink diapers with ruffles. But there is no convincing her that they are adorable. When she sees us get one out she runs for the hills. When we coax her out of hiding she reluctantly stays while we slip one on her. Then she sits with her ears back and quiet like she's being punished. She is so funny! She's like a little kid. But in all seriousness if Binky wants to be on a lap she needs her diaper on. Her "leaking" has no consistency. Sometimes she leaks very little and sometimes a puddle. That is the biggest issue with her. Behaviorally she is the sweetest thing under the sun. Great with everyone and as sweet as sweet gets. 10/18/09 UPDATE Binky is doing just fine in her foster home. While her medical condition hasn't changed she is always making her foster family laugh. She jumps up on the back of their chairs and jumps on their shoulders and licks them, so cute! She loves playing with the other little dog in the house and crawls on top of one of the big dogs to nap.
